Monday – Bad Salzuflen
After disembarkation, we travel east by coach to the German border and Muenster, an attractive university town, where we soak up the atmosphere of the Christmas Market. Over 300 stalls offer a huge range of artisan items, jewellery, decorations and crafts along with sweets, treats and a large selection of culinary delights. We continue to Bad Salzuflen, our host for three nights. Maritim Hotel.
Forests, fields and lakes cover about 75% of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and there is a greater density of theatres, orchestras and museums than anywhere else in Germany. We travel to Hildesheim, where the Christmas Market comes to life in the historical market square around the town hall. Its backdrop is the impressive façade of the former butchers’ guildhouse and the beautifully decorated stands turn this classic historic town into a winter wonderland. We visit the Christmas Market in Hameln, a town synonymous with The Pied Piper. Hameln lies on the banks of the River Weser and the many decorated Christmas Market stalls add to the atmosphere of this charming town. We allow time to enjoy the market in Bad Salzuflen, a thermal spa town, where our hotel is ideally placed next to the spa park and close to the delightful town centre. The scent of mulled wine, roasted chestnuts and gingerbread make a perfect tonic to get you into the Christmas mood.
En route to the Dutch border, we peruse the stalls in Osnabruck’s Christmas Market. Adorned and transformed with festive illuminations, the market is one of the prettiest in the region. We continue to Rotterdam, where our ferry awaits for the overnight crossing to Hull. Twin low-berth outside cabins. Dinner and breakfast on board ship.
We return to Scotland late afternoon after a magical Christmas Market experience.
