We travel east to the German border and North Rhine Westphalia, pausing for a break in Soest, a one thousand year town with a charming historical centre, before continuing to Bad Wildungen and our base for five nights. Hotel Maritim
Legend has it that the baroque castle, Friedrichstein and the myths attached to it, influenced the Brothers Grimm as a model for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The castle stands on a hilltop opposite the splendid town of Bad Wildungen. A combination of art-nouveau buildings, half-timbered houses, an elegant spa district and beautiful fountains, make the area well-worth a visit. Our programme takes us north to Hann Muenden, a lovely town in Lower Saxony, situated on the rivers Fulda and Werra and boasting half-timbered houses dating back more than six hundred years. A visit will be made to Marburg, a vibrant, university town in Hesse, with picture-book cobbled alleys and rows of cute shops and restaurants. The old town is a perfect place to soak up the medieval flair and why not follow the ‘Grimm Path’ which connects fairytale figures from famous Grimm stories?! We enjoy a cruise on the Edersee, in the northern edge of the Kellerwald. The dam was breached by allied bouncing bombs during World War II and the Edersee is the third largest reservoir in Germany. We enjoy a leisurely day in Bad Wildungen, boasting the largest spa park in Europe.
Our return journey takes us west to the Dutch border and before arriving at our overnight ferry, we stop in picturesque Delft, one of the oldest towns in the Netherlands and famous for the renowned blue and white Delft pottery. We continue to Rotterdam, where our ferry awaits for the overnight crossing to Hull. Twin low-berth outside cabins. Dinner and breakfast on board ship.
We return to Scotland in the late afternoon after a memorable holiday.
