Friday - Wednesday - Eger

Eger is a beautiful, historic, unspoilt town in the Bukk hills of eastern Hungary.  It is a gem of a town, lying in a valley and famous for its sumptuous collection of colourful Baroque buildings, its bizarre Neo-Byzantine cathedral and a massive medieval fortress, which featured in a Turkish siege in 1552.  Our introduction to Eger is via a guided walking tour of the old town and as Eger is situated in a well known wine-growing region, we include a local wine tasting in the Valley of the Beautiful Women. Situated close to Eger in a wooded dale and lined with ancient wine cellars, we sample the local wine, Bull's Blood.  We visit the capital city, Budapest, where a guided tour introduces us to this spectacular city bisected by The Danube. Its 19th century Chain Bridge connects the hilly Budda district with flat Pest and after the guided tour, we allow ample time for individual exploration.  Our programme takes in the unspoilt beauty of this fascinating region in Hungary and we enjoy a horse and carriage ride on the Hungarian Plains, a trip by narrow gauge train into the forests and a visit to one of the few Lipizzaner stud farms in Hungary.

Our route today is west to Slovakia via the capital Bratislava before we continue north to The Czech Republic and Brno. Best Western Hotel International.
