After disembarkation, we travel to Delft, where we visit a pottery factory and wiew the production of the renowned blue china. We allow time to enjoy the historic town centre before continuing north to Haarlem, a medieval city and capital of the province of North Holland. Home of Frans Hals, one of the great painters of the 'Dutch Golden Age', Haarlem is a secret European gem and we soak up the atmosphere of this charming city. A short drive takes us to Alkmaar for three nights. Golden Tulip Hotel Alkmaar.
Thursday - Alkmaar
We travel east to the IJsselmeer, a closed off inland bay and the biggest lake in Holland, and visit Hoorn, once a prosperous and powerful trading town and Enkhuizen, a picturesque town and one of the wealthiest in Holland at the time of the 'Dutch Golden Age' in the 17th century.
Friday - Alkmaar
This morning we visit the historic Friday Cheese Market in Alkmaar, where we discover the quaint market customs and the traditionally dressed cheese merchants in the company of a local guide. Up to 1000 cheeses are stacked up in the market square and the process of selling, weighing and watching the carriers hauling the cheeses, makes for a fascinating sight. After watching this centuries-old tradition, we drive to Zaanse Schans, a residential area in which the 18th & 19th centuries are brought to life. Wooden houses, mills, barns, workshops and windmills make for a serene image and we include a tour with a local guide to a windmills and weaver's house before returning to Alkmaar for the night.
